E-Scooters

Issued: 30 Jan 2026

Status Update

PCSO Bicknell has visited known users of E-Scooters to give words of advice and the use and legality of them.

Working with the Steyning Wardens, reports will continue to be raised should this issue continue.

Vulnerable road users, including pedal cyclists, are at heightened risk of serious injury or fatality in road collisions.

With cycling promoted as a sustainable mode of transport, Sussex Police prioritises both the safety of cyclists and the enforcement of responsible cycling behaviour.

It is not currently possible to get insurance for privately owned e-scooters. This means it’s illegal to use them on the road or in public spaces, such as parks, street pavements, and shopping centres.

If you use a privately-owned e-scooter in public, you risk the vehicle being seized under S.165 Road Traffic Act 1988 for having no insurance.

If you cause serious harm to another person whilst riding an e-scooter, the incident will be investigated in the same way it would if you were riding a motorcycle or driving a car.

More information can be found here https://www.sussex.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/rs/road-safety/advice-escooters/

We have visited several of the named users of the scooters to give strong words of advice and explained the legality of using them. We continue to work with the Steyning Wardens who have reported further use of scooters. This is ongoing joint working with wardens and encouraging the public to report.
