Anti-social behaviour caused by street drinkers within South Shields Town Centre

Status Update

Patrols involving both Police and Council Neighbourhood Responders are undertaken on a regular basis and include Project Shield patrols specific to hot spot areas. Over a 12 month period, anti-social behaviour within South Shields has seen a reduction of 21%. We are using all of the legal powers available to us including dispersal notices, arrests and voluntary attender processes, stop and search, prosecution for public spaces protection order, seizure of intoxicating substances, and tenancy action. Joint visits to families of those involved in disorder is being undertaken. Youth justice services are used for those young people arrested, with a view to changing behaviours and longer term problem solving through diversionary services. The Local authority continue to provide diversionary services and engagement at peak times within the identified locations. Bespoke meetings under the name of Operation Flint have been held in relation to the street drinking cohort with a multi-agency approach to longer term problem solving. Fourteen community protection warnings have been issued to deal with this issue.

Joint patrols and targeted action have helped cut anti-scoial behaviour by 25% over the past year. We’re using all available powers, supporting young people through diversion and tackling issues like street drinking. Our partnership remains committed to keeping the area safe.

We have strengthened our response to shop theft by updating protocols, increasing resources, and focusing on the most prolific offenders. This work has led to several Community Behaviour Orders being secured. Since October 2024, offenders linked to this crime trend have received more than 16 years in custodial sentences.

Status Update

Regular joint Police and Council patrols, including Project Shield activity, have helped reduce anti-social behaviour in South Shields by 21% over the past year. We continue to use all available powers and carry out joint visits to tackle those involved. Young people are supported through Youth Justice and diversionary services, and Operation Flint is addressing street-drinking issues, with 14 Community Protection Warnings issued.

Northumbria Police and South Tyneside Council recognise that there are currently ongoing crime and disorder issues linked to South Shields Town Centre and surrounding areas .A multi-agency approach with Northumbria Police, the Council and associated partners are committed to working together to tackle the issues . Patrols involving both Police and Council Neighbourhood Responders are undertaken on a regular basis and include Project Shield patrols specific to hot spot areas as identified. Over a 12 month period ASB within South Shields has seen a reduction of 25% The use of all available powers continue ,including , but not restricted to , dispersal notices, arrests and voluntary attender processes in relation to crime, stop and search , prosecution for public spaces protection order, seizure of intoxicating substances, and tenancy action. Joint visits to families of those involved in disorder is being undertaken with the Police and South Tyneside homes . Youth justice services are used for those young people arrested, with a view to changing behaviours and longer term problem solving through diversionary services. The Local authority continue to provide diversionary services and engagement at peak times within the identified locations. Bespoke meetings under the name of Operation Flint have been held in relation to the street drinking cohort with a multi-agency approach to longer term problem solving , this includes support services as well as tackling any criminal offences. Northumbria Police and South Tyneside Council are determined to maintain that commitment to tackle crime and disorder .
