Crime Statistics in London 2026
London recorded 92,004 crimes in April 2026 across its 33 boroughs, giving an average crime rate of 102.4 per 1,000 residents — 26.0% above the national average of 81.3. Crime rates span a wide range across the capital, from Richmond upon Thames at the lower end (66.2 per 1,000) to Hackney at the top (140.6 per 1,000) — a ratio of more than 2:1 across the capital.
There is a marked divide between Inner and Outer London. The 14 Inner London boroughs average 116.6 crimes per 1,000 residents — roughly 27% higher than the 19 Outer London boroughs, which average 91.9. This gap reflects the concentration of commercial activity, nightlife and high footfall in central areas, where crimes are counted against a smaller resident population relative to the number of people actually present.
Violence and sexual offences is the most commonly recorded crime category in London, with 22,204 offences in April 2026. Anti-social behaviour follows with 19,536 incidents, ahead of Shoplifting (8,234). Together these three categories account for the majority of all recorded crime across the capital's boroughs.
Year-on-year, 17 of the 32 residential boroughs recorded fewer crimes than the same period last year. Westminster saw the sharpest improvement at -16.7%, while Brent recorded the largest increase at +7.8%. About the City of London
The City of London (the "Square Mile") is a separate local authority from Greater London. With around 9,000 residents but over 500,000 daily workers, its crime rate per 1,000 residents appears low compared to its actual footfall. Its figures are excluded from the borough tables above to avoid distorting the London averages.
